Why does sign-in say "Too many sign-in attempts"?

When someone types the wrong password too many times, Realsmart sign-in locks that account for a short time and shows Too many sign-in attempts for this account. Please try again in … minutes. This is a security protection: it stops anyone getting into an account by trying lots of passwords.

How the lock works

Pupils Staff and everyone else
Wrong passwords that lock the account 15 within 15 minutes 10 within 15 minutes
How long it lasts 15 minutes from the last wrong password 15 minutes from the last wrong password
  • The right password clears the count. A pupil who gets it wrong a few times and then right is fine.
  • Only that account is locked. The rest of the class can still sign in.
  • A locked account can't get in any other way either. QR code and Sign in with Google are refused too until the lock lifts.
  • A new password lifts it straight away. When you reset or set the account's password, the lock goes and they can sign in with the new password at once. See Unlock an account early.
  • Otherwise it lifts by itself after the 15 minutes. It can't be switched off, and a school that has asked Realsmart for a stricter limit can have fewer tries (as few as 5) or a longer wait (up to an hour).

Unlock an account early

Give the account a new password. Any password set in Realsmart lifts a lock that started before it:

  • One person: open them (Users, then select their name), go to the Security tab and select Reset to default, or set a new password there.
  • A class or a year group: use Reset passwords. Teachers who can reset passwords can do this too — the page lists every learner in the school, so filter to the class first.

They can sign in with the new password straight away, and with their QR code or Sign in with Google as well. If they lock the account again afterwards, it takes another full set of wrong passwords, and only a fresh reset lifts that lock.

If a pupil keeps getting locked out

They usually don't know their password, or are typing it slightly wrong.

  1. Reset their password. For one pupil, open them (Users, then select their name), go to the Security tab and select Reset to default. For a class or a year group, use Reset passwords.
  2. Give them the new password. They can sign in with it straight away: the reset lifts the lock.
  3. For pupils who find typing a password hard, QR code login lets them sign in by scanning a code instead.

Also check they're typing their school username on its own, as the sign-in page asks, and the password for that account. Signing in with the right password outside their allowed login hours, or during a holiday pause, is refused and counts as a wrong attempt too, so keep an eye on pupils who keep trying at the wrong time. A suspended or deleted account isn't told it's suspended either: it just gets Username or password is incorrect and counts the same way.
