Order the apps on your school's panel

The Apps page (in the sidebar under Platforms) has three tabs. All apps is where you add apps and choose who sees them. Ordering is where you choose the order the tiles appear in on your users' panels. Personal layouts is where you choose whether people can rearrange their own apps and widgets. See Let people arrange their own Launchpad. Your order here is the starting point everyone sees until they change it. Apps opens on the tab you used last, so select the tab you want.

Until you save an order, your school uses the default order: the main Google apps first, then the Microsoft 365 apps, then everything else from A to Z. The Ordering tab says This school uses the default order or This school uses its own order.

Arrange the tiles

Open Apps and select the Ordering tab. The tiles are listed in the order your users see them, each with its number.

• Drag a tile by its handle (the three lines on the left) to a new place, or
• use the up and down arrows on the right to move a tile one place at a time. The arrows work with the keyboard and on a phone.

Starred apps have their own Starred list because the panel shows them in their own row at the top. The other apps are in a second list (Other apps). Each list is ordered on its own. To move an app between the two lists, star or unstar it on the All apps tab.

Each tile shows who can see it when it isn't everyone, for example Learners and admins or Admins only. Apps that come from Realsmart carry a Realsmart label. Admins see every tile that is on for anyone. To change who sees a tile, see Choose who sees each app.

Save the order

Nothing changes on the panel until you select Save order. The button is greyed out until you've moved something. Select Discard changes to go back to the saved order. After saving, the page says Order saved. Panels update within about 10 minutes.

Panels update within about 10 minutes. The panel keeps a short copy of each person's apps, so the new order isn't always instant.

Apps that aren't listed

Only tiles that are switched on for at least one group (admins, staff, learners, governors, observers or Ofsted) are listed, because those are the only ones on the panel. Apps switched off for everyone keep their place after the listed ones, so if you switch one on later it comes back where it was. A line under the lists says how many published apps are switched off for everyone and so aren't listed. If no app is switched on for anyone, the tab says No tiles on the panel: switch an app on for admins, staff or learners on the All apps tab, then come back to order it.

A new app, or one Realsmart adds later, goes at the end of the panel until you place it.

Put everything back to the default order

Select Reset to default and confirm (Reset to default order, then Reset order). Your school's order is removed and the tiles go back to the default order, and the page says Order reset to the default. The button only appears when your school has its own order and you have no unsaved changes.

If your school is in a trust

Your trust can set one order for the apps it manages (Realsmart's shared apps and the trust's own apps) and apply it to every school. If you have arranged your own panel, your trust can choose to keep your order or replace it. The Ordering tab says so when your trust has set an order: If it applies that order again and replaces school changes, your order is replaced. Every saved order and reset is recorded in the audit trail.
