Translate tab

Overview

The Translate tab sits at the bottom of every page. A visitor clicks it, picks a language and the page is shown in that language. It uses Google Translate, so it is automatic: good enough for a family to follow a letter or a term date, but not perfect. For something important, such as admissions or safeguarding, tell families to ask the office.

New websites start with it on, offering English and 20 other languages including Polish, Urdu, Romanian, Arabic, Bengali, Punjabi, Gujarati, Somali, Portuguese, Spanish, French and Mandarin. A school website that existed before keeps its own setting: nothing is switched on for you.

Switch it on in one click

  1. Go to Dashboard.
  2. In New on your website, find Let families read your website in their own language. If you do not see it, translation is already on, you chose Not for us, or your account is not an administrator.
  3. Click Switch on translation.

The message Translation is on appears. Open your website in a private window to see the Translate tab. If it is not there yet, clear the cache (Cache → Clear everything).

Choose the languages

  1. Go to Settings → Google Language Translator.
  2. Under Languages, tick the ones you want to offer.
  3. Click Save Changes.

Turn it off

On the same page, untick Activate under General settings and save.

Troubleshooting

I can't see the Translate tab

Why it happens: translation is off, the cache is showing an old page, or the Translate tab is behind another tab at the bottom of the page.

Fix:

  1. Check Settings → Google Language Translator shows it as activated.
  2. Clear the cache and look again in a private window.
